Java — the Ethiopian line that detoured through Cameroon
Java's seed left Ethiopia for the island of Java in the early 19th century and was later refined by breeders in Cameroon before a stable rerelease under the Java name in the 1980s (Coffee Review's variety report). Panama's documented retail lot is Don Pachi Estate's Java Natural — $33 for 150 g ($22.00 per 100 g) through Café & Aroma, listed at our September 16, 2026 check. Coffee Review rated a Java natural 95 in its testing, with berry-rich complexity it compared to Geisha profiles — one sample's review, not a rule.
Typica — the historical base
Typica is one of Arabica's two historical base landraces, largely replaced elsewhere by higher-yielding varieties but retained in Panama where cup character justifies it. Verified records: Bambito Estate's washed Typica, sold green at Sweet Maria's for $10.25/lb (archived — sold out at the September 30, 2026 check); Altieri's Typica Washed at Boquete Coffee Traders (archived); and Roastmasters' Panama coverage notes Typica among the varieties grown around Volcán Barú. No in-stock roasted Typica offer existed at our check.
Pacamara — the big-bean Salvadoran cross
Pacamara crosses Pacas (a Bourbon-line dwarf mutation found in El Salvador in 1949) with Maragogipe (a large-bean Typica mutation from 1870s Brazil) — hence the conspicuously large beans and the swing between big body and delicacy (Roastmasters' background). Panama records are strong: Finca Auromar's 2025-26 Pacamara Natural is in stock as green coffee at Roastmasters ($15.48/lb — note this is green, not roasted), and Finca Hartmann's Pacamara is roasted to order by Tokyo's Cherry Lab at ¥15,200 for 200 g (in stock, October 1, 2026), with Gardelli's former Hartmann Pacamara archived after selling out.
