Best of Panama auction prices versus retail prices

Panama coffee has two price systems. Auction records set the headlines; retail shelves set what buyers actually pay. This guide puts real numbers from both systems side by side — all sourced, with check dates — and explains why the gap exists and what each price buys.

The auction world, in one paragraph

Best of Panama record prices: $601 per pound for an Esmeralda natural Geisha in 2017; $10,005/kg for Carmen Estate washed Geisha in 2023; $10,013/kg for Lamastus' Elida Geisha Natural Vuelta in 2024; and in 2025, $30,204/kg for Esmeralda's GW-01 washed Geisha with the estate's 97-point natural at $23,608/kg. Private auctions add another layer: Longboard Specialty's first auction averaged $4,668 per kilogram across its Geisha lots. These are nano-lots — often around 20 kg — bought by collectors and competition roasters. The September 2026 auction ('Timeless Resonance: The Trilogy') topped out at $17,000/kg for Elida Estate's Geisha Torre, with Esmeralda's washed Geisha at $10,010/kg — high, but well below the 2025 record.

The retail world, checked

Everyday Panama roasted coffee: Café Palo Alto at $4.47 per 100 g and Kotowa dark roast at $19.88 for 425 g (PanamaGoods, September 30, 2026); Café Suarez's Geisha + Catuai blend at $6.00 per 100 g (producer-direct, September 30, 2026). Quality Geisha roasted: Klatch's Don Julian Natural Geisha at $23.50 per 100 g (September 30, 2026); Carmen Estate Geisha at $29.78 per 100 g (Boquete Coffee Traders, September 16, 2026); Don Pachi Java Natural at $22.00 per 100 g (September 16, 2026). Green retail: Esmeralda Private Collection Geisha at $64.17 per pound (Roastmasters, in stock September 16, 2026).

Why the gap — and what each price buys

Auction lots and retail bags are usually different coffees: record lots are competition-selected nano-lots from specific plots, while retail Geisha is estate-level production from the same farms. The auction sets the ceiling and the reference price the market negotiates from; retail lots deliver the same variety and terroir at 1/10th to 1/500th of the headline number. If your goal is the Geisha experience rather than ownership of a record lot, the $22–$30 per 100 g tier is where most of that experience lives.
